When the Titanic struck an iceberg and was sinking an ocean liner named the Californian was less than 10 miles away, and could have provided rescue assistance. The Titanic sent distress signals via wireless radio, but the Californian’s operator had already gone to bed so the signals weren’t heard. The Titanic also launched emergency flares. Now the crew of the Californian saw the fireworks in the distance and notified their captain. Unfortunately the captain of the Californian did nothing and an opportunity to avert the greatest disaster at sea in history was missed.
Church, are you paying attention to what is happening in our world? People have had a collision with an iceberg called sin (and as predicted things have gone from bad to worse) and are sinking into the depths of an ocean called hell.
Now God saw the problem coming even before it was even a problem and had a plan. Sure enough, one night in the Judean countryside a signal was sounded. “An angel of the Lord appeared to some shepherds and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified .The angel said to the shepherds, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; He is Christ the Lord.” (Luke 2:10-11)
Later on the shepherds went to check things out and sure enough the signal was legitimate. So they built a building started some nice programs and hoped people would come. No, that isn’t what happened at all _ they spread the word about this “Savior”.
Here’s my point: in the midst of the sin and death problem God did His part perfectly. The shepherds responded appropriately _ they spread the word. Now here’s my question: We (yes that’s us church and yes I mean all of us) have seen the distress signal _ are we speeding toward shipwrecked lives to help or are we sleeping the night away? Church, don’t miss an opportunity to avert the greatest disaster of all time _ our family and friends and neighbors sinking to their doom _ drowning in their sin?
Jesus gave a plain and simple command: “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” (Matthew 28:19-20) I say, “All hands on deck! Pour the coal to the boilers _ full speed ahead _ there are souls to rescue _ souls to save!”
