Hanging Out with God

Standard

In James 4 we find some great advice that offers an awesome result, “Come near to God and He will come near to you…” (James 4:8) I can’t think of anything that is more important than hanging out with, or as James put it, coming near to God. And I can’t think of a greater blessing than having God nearby.

Every believer should begin each and every day in God’s presence through prayer and meditation on God’s word, even if it’s just a single verse or sometimes a single word. Then throughout the day remind yourself, “I’m still in His presence. He’s still here with me.”

To bring it into perspective, here is Jesus’ take on coming near to God. “Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.” (Mark 1:35) Now if hanging out with God was important for Jesus then just how important is it for us? I would say it is absolutely essential.

Even though every day has its surprises _ with unexpected changes and challenges, remember that God has never said, “Wow I didn’t expect that to happen.” The routine of starting “today” with God will help you hang out with him all day every day and as a bonus will help you stay as close as possible to the mark that God has set for you.

Now on those rare days when you nail it _ when you get everything done on your “to do” list thank the Lord for working in and through you. On the more normal days when you don’t get everything done that you wanted to get done thank the Lord for hanging out with you and for all that He has accomplished through your efforts.
