A man was shown a red glass bottle and asked what he thought was in it. He wasn’t really sure and so he guessed, “Is it red wine? Red vinegar? Red Kool-Aid?” Finally in frustration he gave up. When he was told that it was milk, he said he wouldn’t believe it until the contents were poured out. As the bottle was emptied sure enough it was white milk. The red color of the bottle had hidden the true identity of the contents until it was poured out.
So it was when God appeared on earth. When he showed up as a baby, then a young boy, and later in an earthly ministry _ someone who was tired, hungry, suffering, weeping they thought He was an ordinary man. True enough He was made in the likeness of man, yet He was also God. And that was made certain when His life was poured out _ the miracles, the teachings, the compassion, the love, the cross, the resurrection. Thomas got it right when he recognized the hidden content _ the real Jesus _ and he exclaimed… “My Lord and my God!” (John 20:28, NIV)
Church, “Salvation is found in no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12, NIV) So let’s get the word out about Jesus. Let’s exalt His great name and not worry so much about coming up with some gimmick to bring church growth. Let’s do what Jesus, the Son of the living God told us to do. Let’s “go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teach them to obey everything Jesus commanded” (Matthew 28:19-20) which when summed up is love God and love people.
