How to Be a Friendly Church

I think every church wants to be known as a friendly church. I came across article a few years ago and it has stuck with me: “I went outside to find a friend but could not find one there. I went outside to be a friend and friends were everywhere.” (“Our Daily Bread” June 21, 2010.)

So where is a good place to start in becoming a friendly church / friend? Well one of the best ways to be a friend is to always pray for people that you come in contact with. That’s the approach Paul used. in his relationship with Timothy he said, “…night and day I constantly remember you in my prayers”. (2 Timothy 1:3) And when it came to the church at Thessalonica he used words like always and continually when it came to praying for them. (See 1 Thessalonians 1:2-3)

How often do we actually pray for our friends let alone people in need of a friend? I think most of us pray for people when they’re going through a crisis. That’s important, but don’t let it be the only time you pray for them. Make it a habit of praying for your friends including the potential ones. Pray for everything _ their marriages, their work, their health, their finances, their happiness, their walk with Jesus _ everything you can think of.

I can’t think of anything more “friendly” than that. So if you want to become a “friendly” church start talking about people by praying for them.
